This weekend, on the 26th and 27th of April, Bucharest cinema lovers will travel right in the heart of America’s most popular city. ShortsUP spring edition celebrates the vivid and extravagant life of New York: more than two hours of short films will guide a virtual journey through the streets of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx and Queens.
ShortsUP via New York event takes places at CinemaPRO, starting 21:00 o’clock. The same film programme will run on Saturday and Sunday, along with a jazz, funk and r&b live performance.
Film selection. Cultural diversity, freedom, speed, courage. These are the key-words that describe the fims included in the ShortsUP selection. A mixture of fiction shorts and documentaries will bring to life the contemporary New York, a place where history is written on every street corner. The Worst (d. Larry Cohen, SUA, 2012) is a bitter-sweet comedy about the power of coincidences. When your phone is dead and you accidentally forget your bag in the New York metro, there is only one option: to take a deep breath and you wait for someone to save the day. Ryan is lucky. Reporting on the Times: The New York Times and the Holocaust (d. Emily L. Harrold, SUA, 2012) is a fascinating short subject documentary by student filmmaker that tells the story of how and why the New York Times willfully ignored reporting the Holocaust during the 1940’s. A great insight into the importance of journalism and the dangers when prominent papers ignore the story.
Jazz, funk and r&b vibes. Nothing can define better the spirit of New York than music. In the CinemaPRO lobby, a live band will boost the rhythm of the event with a mix of jazz, r&b and funk.
A real trip to New York. One lucky short film fan will get the chance to travel to New York beyond the cinema screen. Austrian Airlines offers a plain ticket with New York destination through a special contest which will be run in both nights of ShortsUP. More details at the event.
Films and digital stories. At ShortsUP, New York is seen as a strong point o referance for the most defining worldwide trends in fashion, music, politics or journalism. The films will be completed by a series of innovative info-graphics created will the help of Chenar.ro, the first Romanian project of visual journalism.
